New Belgium Brewing Company Subpar Pale Ale

The New York Times-bestselling book Subpar Parks is an illustration project by artist Amber Share that brings together natural wonders from around the world with their online one-star reviews. In the book, as an example, you’ll find the beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park set next to the asinine comment, “Not worthwhile at all.” 

To celebrate Earth Day this year, New Belgium is partnering with Share, who provided the illustrations for the brewery’s Subpar Pale Ale. New Belgium is donating $1 for every Subpar beer sold to environmental organizations in Colorado and North Carolina. The beer is a clear light straw color with honeysuckle, floral, and grain aromas. Take a sip and you get citrus and floral flavors with a pine finish that’ll remind you of being out in the woods. New Belgium puts it this way: “We hope you find this beer as 'subpar' as our national parks. Cheers!”

Seattle’s Lucky Envelope got its name from the Chinese tradition of giving out “lucky” red envelopes typically filled with paper money. Together, the color red and the money symbolize good fortune and prosperity. Brewed to celebrate the Chinese New Year, Metal Ox is a collaboration with Asheville’s Highland Brewing. Made with MarketSpice Lychee Rose Black Tea, the beer is a hazy butterscotch color with aromas of citrus and floral hops. That first sip hits you with flavors of black tea and tropical fruit, followed by a hint of creamy sweetness and some earthiness to finish.
