7 Keys to Building Intrinsic Motivation

Image
https://ift.tt/FNuixzn For those who’ve served in the United States military, the expression ‘own it’ is a cultural touchstone that encapsulates a valuable mindset. But the idea behind the phrase isn’t exclusive to the armed forces; it’s a universal principle that can benefit anyone striving for success. It means assessing the situation and accepting responsibility for your actions without shifting blame. The question then becomes: What does it take to own it? The answer lies in self-accountability, self-discipline, and self-motivation—or what experts call intrinsic motivation. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a student, or a professional seeking advancement, owning it is essential. How Matt Higgins Climbed and Conquered the Corporate Ladder Read article Each person strives to achieve their definition of success, but it’s often challenging to navigate. The foundation of this journey lies in two essential components: accountability and self-discipline. These factors are paramoun...

The Best New Golf Courses to Play in 2023

Image
https://ift.tt/D936p1j Buzzworthy new golf courses are the exception these days, not the rule. In the 1990s and early 2000s, heavy investment and mass-scale earthmoving supplied golfers with a smorgasbord of fresh playing options —and it oversaturated the very industry golf developers sought to catapult. But golf is having a renaissance: Spurred by the pandemic and ever-increasing accessibility to the sport , golf across the world is as popular today as it’s ever been. While the days of rampant course construction will likely never return, a spree of new developments have sprung up in recent years, and that means there are new golf courses to add to your hit list. From a clone course in Wisconsin to a track nestled along Saint Lucia’s jaw-dropping shoreline, these are some of the best new golf courses to put on your radar in 2023. The usual suspects (that is, the game’s most-respected designers) are behind the bulk of this work: Coore, Crenshaw, Doak, and Hanse. Even C.B. Macdonald, a...

2023 Range Rover Sport Is the Ultimate Crossover Flex

Image
https://ift.tt/AdnfmWN Carmakers must feel relieved by America’s bottomless taste for crossovers. Why? Just look at most of them. As a category, they’re hardly a pretty lot. This isn’t Mercedes-Benz or Ferrari in the 1960s. It’s not even Volvo at its boxy best. Far too many of these “barges” look about as pretty as that noun connotes. And then there’s the 2023 Range Rover Sport—the exception, not the rule. It looks like you’ve arrived. You made your number. You’re somebody . It announces all of that without effort. There’s no hood scoop or extraneous metal creasing: no bombast. Ineos Grenadier First Drive: Don’t Call It a Throwback Read article It’s just rock-solid gorgeous, with a muscular shoulder line and 22-inch wheels adding just the right stance. In other words, like a great sports car—and unlike too many of its brethren in the crossover/SUV ranks—all the proportions are spot on. But, you have to ask: What’s it like to drive? Why else would I want one? We have answers. ...

Highland Park 54 Year Old Is Among Best Scotch Releases of 2023

Image
https://ift.tt/s1wJr8f Highland Park Distillery is among the most storied whisky producers in all of Scotland . The malt maker first fired up its copper pots back in 1798 along the northernmost reaches of the country: the remote, windswept isles of Orkney. It’s been humbly laying down liquid here ever since and long ago established a house style—a gorgeous balance of sweet and peat . In all those years, though, nothing that rolled out of the cask carried as much age and weight as its newest announcement: Highland Park 54 Year Old. Gordon Motion, master whisky maker at Highland Park. Courtesy Image It’s not just that it’s Highland Park’s oldest expression. It’s also among its boldest. The juice in question is made of 10 barrels birthed a full year before man landed on the moon. After a patient slumber of some four decades, the remaining stock—which hadn’t been abducted by the angels—was transferred into first-fill European sherry butts where it lived for the next 14 years. This mo...

Surly Releases Preamble: New All-steel 'Pavement Bike'

Image
https://ift.tt/gIKj5h3 The market for capable entry-level bikes is heating up. Today, Surly threw more gas on the fire with the release of Preamble, an affordable bike that’s designed for commuting and road riding. Surly is known for bucking trends (the brand is proudly committed to steel frames, eschewing newer materials like carbon fiber) and producing versatile bikes designed for everyday riding. The Preamble definitely fits that mold with a durable steel frame and accommodations for racks and wider tires. Surly calls the Preamble “a regular bike at a great price.” It’s designed for road rides, commuting, and jaunts through the park. Although it can handle some mixed surfaces, it’s not built for long hauls on trails. Even so, it should be a versatile and dependable option, especially for newer cyclists. The 100 percent chromoly steel frame features eyelets for racks and fenders, as well as bosses for two water bottle cages. The fork also has accessory mounts for attaching a rack ...

Celebrating the Underrated Genius of Riviera Country Club

Image
https://ift.tt/dxijTeS Last year at a press conference ahead of the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles, Jordan Spieth gushed over the host venue: “If I could pick one non-major PLAYERS Championship to win on the PGA Tour, it would be here,” Spieth said. “I love Riviera. I think it’s in the conversation as the best golf course in the world.” For a player with a green jacket to throw Riviera into the debate over the best course in the world is possibly the highest praise imaginable, but he’s not alone. 25 of the World's Greatest Golf Courses You Can Actually Play Read article “This is the best golf course we play all year,” Justin Thomas adds. “You could ask majority of the Tour and we would play here every other week if we could.” Tom Marzolf, senior designer at Fazio Design , confirms: “If you’ve seen and played Riviera, this course is in your top 10.” What It’s Like to Play a Round at Riviera I happen to agree. If you told me we had a tee time at Riv tomorrow, I’d...

Famed Yosemite Climber Zach Milligan Dies After Ice Climbing Fall

Image
https://ift.tt/iSGysnC Legendary free-solo climber Zach Milligan was found dead at the bottom of a 2,300-foot ice climb in the Canadian Rockies. Rangers with Parks Canada found Milligan’s body close to the bottom of Polar Circus in Jasper National Park on February 11 after noticing his parked car hadn’t moved. Milligan was part of the team that first skied down Yosemite’s Half Dome in 2021. The Georgia native, 42, moved out to Colorado in the early 2000s to adventure full-time, chasing crags around the great American West. He spent his early years teaching himself how to climb on faces in Alabama, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Milligan first became interested in climbing ice in 1999 while living in Atlanta, according to Gripped . He asked a friend, Doug Peterson, who owned a climbing shop, about getting into ice climbing and he hooked him up with his own personal set of gear. After climbing in North Carolina, he went out and bought his own ice climbing kit and promptly took off for...

Best Bars in Mexico City for Low-key Cocktail Lounges and Mezcal Shrines

https://ift.tt/t3v8pEg Mexico City is home to over 20 million people, making it one of the world’s most populated urban locales. Nearly four million out-of-towners visit the Mexican capital every year—among them agave and cocktail enthusiasts primed for a trip unlike any other. Ciudad de México (CDMX) is sprawlingly huge, densely populated, and bursting with life on virtually every corner. In other words, you’ll want to plan ahead before arriving. That’s especially true for drink fans in a city dotted everywhere with world-class bars of all shapes and vibes—from low-key cocktail joints to high-octane mezcal shrines, with all the nearby al pastor tacos required to keep you upright for the duration. When night falls in CDMX, the street that separates Roma Sur from Roma Norte buzzes in neon. Street lights reveal buildings colored in pastels. Imbibers hop from bar to bar, engaging with friends new and old, fueling up for the evening with the help of wrinkled sidewalk vendors, and gai...

4-Day Weekend in the Italian Riviera

Image
https://ift.tt/wGznLHS Mention “the Italian Riviera,” and people are apt to respond, “Yes, the Amalfi Coast is on my bucket list.” But the Amalfi Coast , south of Naples and more than 400 miles away, already has a name: the Amalfi Coast. The Italian Riviera, or Liguria, on the other hand, stretches between the Tuscan coast all the way to where the country ends at the French border and the Cote d’Azur . Paradoxically, despite its popularity, northern Italy’s Liguria is one of the country’s more misunderstood places, even among the reasonably well-traveled. Where to Find the Best Negronis in Milan Read article To complicate matters even further, Liguria itself is divided in half by the city of Genoa, with Riviera di Ponente (coast of the setting sun) to the west and Riviera di Levante (coast of the rising sun) to the east. Because it wouldn’t be feasible to tackle the entire Riviera in a long weekend (or even a week), better to choose Levante, with all its cachet and relatively c...

Skiing in Japan Is Back Again—and the Powder Was Worth the Wait

Image
https://ift.tt/h8ixcej “I love a run that makes your ears pop,” my friend Paul says, a smile splitting his face. We’re at Japan’s Nozawa Ski Resort , having just finished a 3,000-vertical-foot side country run of steep glades to the valley floor far below. Ear equalization comes with the territory when skiing in Japan. At the bottom, we dump onto a groomer that leads to an old-school, two-person chair, which carries us up to a more modern gondola for lap two. But first, a quick stop to refuel at a private slopeside restaurant—one of five in a row, and a welcome change from the corporate-owned cafeterias at stateside resorts. On the menu: katsudon (chicken cutlet over noodles with an egg), miso soup, yakitori (chicken skewers) and large bottles of Kirin beer. We Tested the Best Ski and Snowboard Gear of 2023 Read article After a few side country runs through a forest of low-angle beech trees and one more lap down pillow-hopping Nozawa Bowl, we traverse the site of the 1998 Ol...
