Everything You Need to Know About the Rolex Series

Image
https://ift.tt/1CKzMWc After a tee-throwing controversy  and deluge in the desert that pushed the final round to Monday,  Rory McIlroy  eked out a win over Patrick Reed with a birdie on the 72nd hole of this year’s  Hero Dubai Desert Classic . It was a dramatic finish to McIlroy’s first victory at the Rolex Series event on the DP World Tour. But  it might have you thinking: What exactly is the Rolex Series? If you’re the kind of golf nut that records the overnight action from around the globe, you probably already know the answer. But for those who teeter into the less-obsessed camp, the short answer is: must-see TV. The long answer is the Rolex Series is a collection of five elevated tournaments on the DP World Tour (aka the European Tour), which comprises the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Hero Dubai Desert Classic, Genesis Scottish Open, BMW PGA Championship, and the season-ending DP World Tour . Each event in the quintet draws the world’s best, who are all t...

Snowmobile-accessed Ski Touring in Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana

Image
https://ift.tt/6yYje8I We spend a healthy portion of our winters seeking places to ski that are far removed from humanity. Sometimes we use pack horses , converted fishing boats , electric motorcycles , or even helicopters when we’re lucky. We treasure the solitude afforded when you go deep in the mountains—feeling small against a backdrop of rocky behemoths. That’s why we urge you to make your next great adventure snowmobile-accessed ski touring. With a few close friends and landscapes that stoke humility and self-reliance, it’s the Wild West like you’ve never experienced before. Why you should try snowmobile-accessed ski touring This winter, deciding to keep our travel domestic, we opted for snowmobiling. We already had the necessities—a midsize pickup, trailer, and two used sleds—but wanted to upgrade some of our gear and skills for more remote backcountry travel. In years past, we’ve used snowmobiles almost weekly to access the better ski terrain near home in central Oregon, but...

The Benefits of Resisting Instant Gratification

Image
https://ift.tt/Ffk8wvQ How easily can you put off getting something you want? This process—delayed gratification—demonstrates the ability to resist the temptation of an immediate reward in favor of a more long-term one later. It’s a concept that was central to a Stanford University social science experiment involving marshmallows . The aptly named Stanford marshmallow experiment, conducted by psychologist Walter Mischel in the late 1960s, showed that our ability to delay instant gratification is perhaps one of the most significant skills we learn. Let’s look at the experiment, the unsettling trend toward instant gratification, and how you can become more self-disciplined in this area. The Stanford Marshmallow Experiment The now-famous experiment tested the ability of young children to delay gratification by presenting them with a marshmallow and giving them a choice to eat it immediately or wait a few minutes to receive a second marshmallow. As each of the 32 children tested sat alo...

Image
https://ift.tt/9Cs0SQq Most of us would rather cut the cord and opt for the best wireless earbuds when working out. While over-ear headphones can be bulky and wired earbuds tend to be cumbersome, wireless buds are experiencing a renaissance these days—thanks in large part to improved Bluetooth technology and increasing demand for alternatives to Apple’s ubiquitous AirPods. Brooklyn's Halftone Spirits Celebrates Global Botanicals in Its Craft Gin

Image
https://ift.tt/4qHT2gl Head up the concrete steps at Brooklyn’s Union Street Station, turn right on President, and go west towards the smell (provided by the notoriously sludgy Gowanus Canal) beyond the timid bustle of 3rd Avenue. On the right, you’ll see an asphalt gray building with a baby pink garage door . You’ve arrived at Halftone Spirits —the distillery alchemizing Brooklyn’s most intriguing set of gin based on global travel. At one point or another, everything good goes through Brooklyn. Hip-hop, movies, indie rock, craft breweries—Kings County influenced them all. Now, with the craft spirits movement in full flight, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise to see a Brooklyn-based distillery pushing the boundaries of gin. Andrew Thomas, distiller and owner of Halftone Spirits, however, innovates by taking his customers outside of Brooklyn via the brand’s Modular series . The culinary world often discusses traveling through food, a concept different from terroir—the characteristic t...

We Tested the Best New Performance Skis of 2023

Image
https://ift.tt/z5mlrbE New skis can turn a ho-hum season into magic. Storm days become powder days and hardpack evolves into an opportunity to link tight turns on your carvers. While it’s difficult to make rhyme or reason of all the new skis, we’ve done the heavy lifting by testing the season’s most attractive candidates and whittling the list down to the best skis of 2023. Our group of six testers offers a combined ski history of more than 100 years of high-level race and big-mountain experience. Each ski was put through its paces for a minimum of 25 days on snow in a wide variety of conditions. We whittled more than 20 contenders down to the following dozen. When you’re shopping, keep in mind your day-to-day reality—chest-deep pow, fast groomers, crunchy crud—and remember, skis with more rocker (rise in the tip and tail) can generally be skied slightly shorter than those with a flat profile/base. The following skis will perform for anyone, but for those struggling to make the tra...
