Dispatches: Source to Sea by SUP on California's Klamath River

Image
https://ift.tt/3jrJF7H In an era of increasing dam removals across the country to restore rivers to their natural habitat—the tally stands at more than 1,000 so far—it’s often hard to gain a true before-and-after picture of how these cement blockades have changed their river’s environment. A trio of standup paddleboarders recently went out of their way—a long way—in a multi-year effort to find out. In early May, adventurers Spencer Lacy, Lance Ostrom and Driy Wybaczynsky headed out as the first team to SUP—self-supporting the trip with a 10-foot raft—from source to sea down 234 miles of Oregon and California’s Klamath River, which is impeded by four dams, all of which are slated for removal in the next few years. Their goal: chronicle the river in its current dammed-up state, and then return in a few years’ time to do it again once they are all removed to see the difference first-hand. “We wanted to make an environmental statement on this trip,” says Lacy, who is sponsored by Badfis

Recent Study Names Top 5 U.S. Beer Cities

Image
https://ift.tt/3yafJRv Want to know the best cities in America to slam a cerveza? A recent study by Clever, a real estate data research firm, tallied towns for the top locations to settle down and tap some suds. After some data-driven research and probably a couple of pints, they came up with their list of the top beer cities in the U.S.   The study looked at the 50 most populous metro areas in the U.S. and then compared their number of breweries, density per 100 square miles, and beers and beer styles per brewery. “We research and report on a variety of topics—including attributes about major cities that might entice people to move there,” says Clever’s lead researcher Francesca Ortegren. “This time we decided to focus on breweries because our team is filled with folks who love beer and visiting breweries when we explore new cities. So, we figured others could benefit from the information as we start to move out of pandemic-related lockdowns.” These Scenic Microbreweries Of

These New Men's Fragrances Are Perfect for Summer

Image
https://ift.tt/3htiN4K For many in the perfume world, summer fragrances mean one thing: citrus. But within that category, there’s quite a bit of variety. Citrus scents can include lemon, grapefruit, lime, bitter orange and its many derivatives (like petitgrain , neroli , and orange blossom), and one of the perfume industry’s most beloved ingredients, bergamot. In general, these scents are fresh and uplifting —perfect for hot weather.     How to Choose a Summer Scent Before you buy, there are a few things you should know about summer fragrances. Citrus scents dissipate quickly (they likely won’t last more than a few hours). That can be a desirable attribute in the summer: A heavy cloud of fragrance that persists all day might be off-putting in the heat. If you prefer a scent that’ll stick around, look for formulations that have longer-lasting notes, like musk or patchouli, in the base. Alternatively, you can try boosting the endurance of your scent by layering it with one of the ma

Mission Workshop and Afterschool Projects Drop Summer Tie-Dye Styles

Image
https://ift.tt/3w99s7a Mission Workshop , the San Francisco-based cycling gear boutique that’s known for its tough, technical designs, has teamed up with Afterschool Projects to add a little summer fun to its normally dark and muted palette. Afterschool Projects creates equally innovative bags and apparel that use colorways—pops of bright colors and playful patterns—inspired by Southern California street life. The collab was sparked by the Mission Workshop and Afterschool Projects teams questioning whether they could give their burly and durable technical fabrics a more whimsical touch by attempting to tie-dye them. The answer to that query was eventually a resounding “yes” after a bit of trial and error, which resulted in the teams creating a unique process that gave Mission Workshop’s favored tech fabric, X-Pac , a cool, psychedelic feel with three camouflage-like designs: Inyo, Mojave, and Hippie. To up the street cred of the new collection, the X-Pac fabric in the bags is tie

On Made a Custom Tennis Shoe for Roger Federer. Here's How You Can Buy It

Image
https://ift.tt/3AaOVCJ If you’ve been watching Roger Federer play at Wimbledon, you may have noticed the shoes on his feet have an unfamiliar logo. That’s the symbol for On, a Swiss footwear company that Federer has teamed up with to create custom tennis shoes designed around his feet and playing style. The shoes are called The Roger Pro, and if you want to emulate the Swiss superstar in your next tennis match (or at least dress like him), you can grab a pair for yourself: The shoes are now on sale at Kith.     The release comes as a bit of a surprise because On doesn’t list The Roger Pro for sale on its own website (although the company does sell a line of Federer-inspired lifestyle shoes ). A true tennis shoe is also a departure for the brand, which launched in 2010. Before partnering with Federer , On mostly focused on running shoes equipped with its trademark CloudTec soles.
